Barcelona : what to see
The sights in Barcelona are endless and the hidden gems are even better. We love to visit places that are often overlooked by tourists as we think this makes the experience much more special. Don’t get us wrong, you should definitely check out the Sagrada Familia but we love art, live performances and basically any kind of unique experience when exploring new cities so this is a little collection of our current favourite gems in Barcelona and places we think are worth a visit.
The Moco Museum
Art lovers unite. The Moco Museum in Barcelona pays homage to artists who challenge the ordinary and it features artworks with a disruptive edge, including our favourite, the Banksy Exhibition. We also love that the museum was founded with the mission to attract broader and younger audiences and making art more accessible to the public. It has a very upbeat and inspiring atmosphere, displaying large and impressive works including some cool digital mediums. Its small, but we love that its not overwhelming and it doesn’t take up a whole day.
Libreria Finestres
The coolest independent bookstore in Barcelona. It has an elegant, semi-outdoor café and a bar located on the terrace of the bookstore (an oasis in the middle of the city) that contributes to the main idea of Finestres: a bookstore for reading. Find comfortable armchairs around the welcoming space that invites you to stay as long as you want (whether you have bought the book or not). Finally - a bookstore that invites you to read..
Spa at Aire
AIRE is located in a 18th century warehouse next to El Born Market. A space for the relaxation of body and mind, this restored and modernised ancient baths offers thermal baths, massage rooms and a long list of endless treatments. There is something about this spa that is almost hypnotic - a space full of magic. The floating pool was our favourite.
Barceloneta Beach
Framed by palm trees and lined with beachfront bars and restaurants, soak up the lively beach culture of Barcelona along the beach. This beach is always super busy and lively and great if you want s buzzy atmosphere but if you’re looking for a more relaxed beach setting head down the shore to the Poblenou area which is usually a little less packed but still very pretty.
The Bunkers
The perfect place to watch the sunset in Barcelona. This hilltop hideaway is a truly chilled out vantage point where you can enjoy some of the most epic aerial views of BCN. Take food and a bottle of wine up here to share and find a spot to watch the sun disappear behind the horizon.
Las Ramblas
An iconic boulevard lined with shops, cafés, restaurants, street performers, flower stalls and the famous St Joseph’s Market. This street is always bustling with tourists and locals so don’t expect a leisurely stroll but more of a circus - here you can really experience the essence of Barcelona's dynamic spirit.
Street Art and Art Museums
Street art in Barcelona is a vibrant expression of the city's creative spirit, adorning its streets, alleys, and buildings with colourful murals, stencils, and graffiti. Our favourite art museum is the Picasso Museum and the one you must see if only visiting one. Gaudi Architecture
With innovative techniques and a colourful palette, Gaudí's buildings are renowned for their intricate details and timeless beauty. Some of his iconic works around Barcelona include the Sagrada Familia in he heart of the city (a must see at least once), Casa Batlo, Casa Mila and Park Guell.
Gothic Quarter
The Gothic Quarter in Barcelona is a historic labyrinth of narrow medieval streets and ancient buildings dating back to Roman times. A true treasure trove of architectural wonders, including the iconic Barcelona Cathedral. Placa Reial is also the perfect spot to stop for tapas, grab a drink and watch the world go by.
La Boqueria
La Boqueria is the largest market in Spain, and one of the best food markets in the world. Aside from the delicious sweets, the space overflows with fruit, fresh seafood, and rows of chorizo and jamón. We always head here for the freshest fruit smoothies in the summer months.
Mount Tibiado
At the highest peak in Barcelona on Mount Tibidabo, you’ll not only find breathtaking panoramic views of the city but also their colourful amusement park, Parc d'Atraccions Tibidabo, which is one of the oldest in the world dating back to 1901 and a breath-taking neo-Gothic cathedral the Temple de Sagrat Cor. This is such a surreal experience which really makes you feel as though you have just been transported back in time..
