Amsterdam : cult cafes

Amsterdam’s coffee scene spans contemporary cafes, micro roasters and espresso bars usually complete with bakeries serving the freshest pastries we have ever eaten. If you’re looking for the best cafes in Amsterdam, then these cafes might be your jam.

This spot is super popular and always busy but no there’re no surprise here as not only is it located in the heart of Oud-West but this cafe is outstanding for their interiors alone. A sophisticated Scandinavian style soft beige concrete bar with matching beige walls and wooden furniture creates an aesthetically calming space for you to try their cinnamon buns which are *chefs kiss*

Tucked away on a side street in our favourite vogue-esque neighbourhood, The Jordaan, is this super cute indie cafe that is one of the most Instagrammed cafés in town, not just for the coffees but also thanks to its picture-perfect interior. If you love matcha, then definitely give this place a try.

Located in Joordan, people (aka us) are usually queuing outside to get hold of a Pistachio Cruffin - the pastries here are to die for. The space here is tiny, so it’s more like a take out store with a few tables but it’s still worth the hype. They also do a stunning matcha if that’s your thing.

Right in the heart of the fashion district of Amsterdam, find a cool, stylish crowd in this twenty-first century coffee shop. The place stimulates creativity and feels warm and inspiring. The art hanging on their walls gives you the chance to discover new visual artists from Amsterdam and the surrounding area and there’s always new collabs to check out throughout the year. If you are a lover of matcha, try the matcha ice coffee with a scoop of matcha ice cream - wow.

Located in a former cinema which dates back to the 1920s, this two story haunt in in De Pijp always has a cool crowd (lots of expats) and also a great place to take your laptop and get some work done. Try the coconut pancakes with whipped coconut cream whilst sipping on a coconut latte - coconut heaven.

You can find many Bagels and Beans dotted all around Amsterdam and at no surprise because the the bagels and coffee here are unreal and the atmosphere is always warm and homely. The tuna melt is our favourite bagel to order but they’re all delicious (and big portions as well - win). Also FYI ‘beans’ means coffee (not beans like we originally thought..oops)

Enjoy an espresso at this creative micro roastery and delicious bakery bar serving fresh homemade pastries in a rustic and relaxed setting with cool and vintage-like interiors - oh and it’s just 5 minutes away from Oosterpark.

An Amsterdam gem that feels like a home from home, Back to Black is perhaps one of the cosiest cafes on the list. Their original location is tucked away on a quiet little canal-side street, an easy walk from the Rijksmuseum and the Heineken museum. Grab a cup and enjoy a cuddle from Binkie their house cat.

Bringing a slice of Sydney and New York to Amsterdam. One of the first in the city’s wave of artisanal espresso bars, this local neighbourhood cafe serves good coffee made by passionate baristas who have created more of a lifestyle brand than just a coffee shop - their merch is actually really cool. This place is also big on sustainability and using natural resources to ‘leave a positive impact on the world.’ We’re sold.

A little further out of the centre, find this shared co-working space in the hip inner-city Haarlemmerdijk area next to Joordan. For a quick pick-me-up, grab a coffee at the coffee bar at front of Venu or stay longer and get some work done to experience their really cool interiors and sleek aesthetic. PS. the vanilla-rose latte is incredible.
